Event Overview

Since this will be Universal Orlando's 21st annual Halloween Horror Nights, the park will be playing up the "21" theme with a gambling motif. Think: wagers gone horribly wrong. The host character this year will be Lady Luck. Instead of the benevolent woman who helps craps players roll lucky sevens and blackjack players secure face cards however, this creature seems intent on bringing nothing but bad luck. Using her beauty and charm to lure visitors, the temptress will morph into an evil, ugly monster hellbent on dishing out misery. Lady Luck will seem to present guests with potentially lucrative choices, but in Universal's demented version of a casino, the house will always win--in disturbing ways. Sounds like my last trip to Vegas!

It wounds as if the park, which arguably has staged the world's best Halloween event (at a theme park or anywhere else) over the past few years, will continue its grand tradition. The Universal scaremeisters will present eight haunted houses, including:

  • The Thing will be based on the upcoming remake of the movie thriller, "The Thing" and will feature the shape-shifting creature.
  • Saws N' Steam: Into the Machine will incorporate fiendish machines from a steampunk-influenced nightmare.
  • Nevermore: The Madness of Poe will give the gothic author and horror pioneer his due.
  • The Forsaken will focus on the forgotten fourth ship in Columbus' New World journey. This one is filled with forsaken ghosts.

Using enhancements like theatrical fog and inspired props, Universal will undoubtedly do its usual incredible job making over the park with distinct scare zones. And you can count on ghouls lurking around every corner. Among the six areas will be:

  • 7 will be the home of Lady Luck and her scary band of temptresses.
  • Your Luck Has Run Out will offer guests the illusion of being able to hit the jackpot. It's a safe bet, however, that the wagers will be rigged.

Bill and Ted will be back for another excellent adventure. For the uninitiated, the slacker time travelers star in a bizarre Broadway-esque song and dance romp each year in which they skewer current events and people in the news. The park will also present Death Drum, a show that will combine horror and "extreme drumming." That sounds oddly compelling, if completely baffling.

Many of the parks' premier rides, like the highly themed Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster (which, of course, fits right into the event's vibe), will be open during the event, but the focus will be on the Halloween hoopla.

The popular HHN frequently sells out, especially on weekends, so it's advisable to purchase tickets in advance (see info above).
