A Grave Situation at Canobie Lake Park
Oct 3rd 2011, 14:13

Like most amusement parks this time of year, Canobie Lake Park in New Hampshire offers a Halloween event. While it can't compare to huge-budget presentations like Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights, the small park's Screemfest nonetheless offers plenty of holiday fear with roaming characters, loads of decorations, and five walk-through mazes.

Among the new haunts, the aptly named Demons of Darkness is totally dark (each pair of visitors receives a glow stick to help them navigate through the inky blackness) even if it skimps a bit on the demons. The other new maze is the outdoor Head Hunters at Cannibal Lake. While it's a great name, it was the weakest of the mazes with voodoo-dressed meanies randomly wandering around. The best haunt was The Village, another outdoor maze. The cornstalks that sprang to life and chased hauntees was especially unnerving.

One of the up-charge attractions was The Last Ride, in which guests enter a coffin and have a simulated burial. Yikes! Live entertainment included the bizarre Mini KISS, a diminutive band of sorta-lookalikes who croaked out the classic band's hits and pretended to play instruments (although the drummer did actually play, and the guitarist performed one quite competent solo). Perhaps the single most (unintentionally) horrifying sight at Canobie was the lederhosen-wearing guys in the polka band who performed as part of the park's simultaneous Octoberfest event. That was nightmare-inducing.
