Luck Be a Sadist Tonight
Aug 31st 2011, 14:34

When I wrote about Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights a few days ago, the park hadn't revealed all of its sordid details. Today, however, I can report that the scaremeisters who develop what is among the best (if not the best) Halloween events anywhere appear to have come up with another winner. Perhaps "winner" is a poor choice of a description. To celebrate the 21st annual event, HHN will run with the "21" theme and will present a gambling motif in which the house always wins -- and we're not just talking about extracting money here. The hostess will be Lady Luck, a perverted distillation of the legendary character who will use her seductive ways to lead guests into dangerous wagers. Read more about the event in my updated overview of Halloween Horror Nights 21.

For those considering the park as a celebration destination, comprehensive party packages are also available.

Friday nights in October will see Wild Woods turned into a Haunted Hotel with hosted festivities. The water park will represent a pirate ship (complete with Captain Jack Sparrow impersonator), and feature a magician, DJ, scary movies, and host disgusting food specials in the wooded cemetery lounge.

Welcome to the Hotel Legoland California
Aug 30th 2011, 17:11

Because it had been rumored for some time, the recent announcement by Legoland California that it would be developing an onsite hotel didn't hit me like a ton of bricks. But it is big news for the popular park. Scheduled to break ground this October, the 250-room Legoland Hotel is scheduled to open in summer 2013.

The Lego-themed hotel will be geared to families with young children, the same audience that visits the park. Two hotels that are operated by third-party chains are already on the Legoland campus. The new hotel will be built and run by the park. There is a Legoland Hotel adjacent to the park in Billund, Denmark and another one under construction next to the park in Windsor, England. Legoland Florida is set to open in a few weeks, but there are no announced plans for a Sunshine State hotel. (Although I'd have to believe that should the California hotel and the Florida park prove successful, a hotel would be in the works pronto).

While the recession has been dealing blows to many other parks, Legoland California has been remarkably resilient and has posted impressive attendance numbers. Over the last few years, it has added a water park and a Sea Life Aquarium. With the addition of the hotel, it will become more like a destination resort.

Throw a First Birthday Cupcake Theme Party
Aug 29th 2011, 10:00

Throwing a first birthday cupcake theme party is a wonderful way to celebrate this special milestone in your child's life. Since cupcakes are appealing to people of all ages, you can be assured that adult guests will have just as much fun as your little partygoers.

Party Invitations for a Cupcake First Birthday

Cupcake themed birthday party invitations are available from larger party supply stores as well as online specialty shops like Etsy. If you'd like to make your own party invitations, Scrapbooks Etc. has a free pattern for a cupcake paper piecing that would be adorable as a decoration for the front of your card. Add a cute saying such as "Lil' Cupcake" or "My Little Cupcake" if desired.

First Birthday Cupcake Ideas for Party Decorations

Decorate for your cupcake party with balloons and streamers that match your chosen color scheme and create a giant cupcake flower arrangement to use as your table centerpiece. If you're going to have the guests decorate cupcakes as a party activity, add a few aprons, chef's hats, and decorating tools to help set the mood.

First Birthday Party Activities

For a first birthday, it's best to keep the entertainment simple in order to avoid cranky and over stimulated guests. However, you will still want to have a few fun activities to make the occasion seem special.

If letting the children decorate real cupcakes sounds too messy, Melissa and Doug makes a wooden cupcake decorating toy that would be fun for little ones to play with.

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff would be a good story to read to children at a first birthday cupcake theme party. Make the story more exciting for your young guests by rounding up a cat puppet and a cupcake toy so you can act out the plot.

A cupcake piñata would be a fun addition to a birthday party that includes children of all ages. You can either make a piñata or purchase a cupcake piñata from a party supply store such as Party City.

First Birthday Cupcake Cake Ideas

Obviously, a tower of cupcakes is the natural choice for a first birthday cupcake theme party. However, if you'd prefer to have one large cake, Wilton makes a giant cupcake pan that you can use to keep to your first birthday theme. Another possible idea would be to have a giant cupcake surrounded by a circle of small cupcakes. This would also be a good compromise if some of your guests require accommodations such as gluten-free cupcakes.

If you're looking for something beyond a traditional white cupcake, About Busy Cooks and About Southern Food both have extensive collections of recipes for unusual cupcakes.

Party Favors

Party favors aren't necessary for a first birthday, but it can be fun to send guests home with a small token of your appreciation. Handmade rainbow crayon cupcakes accompanied by a cupcake coloring sheet would be cute and in keeping with your first birthday party theme.

Liberation Theology: Common Themes in Liberation Theologies
Aug 28th 2011, 15:00

During the late 1960s and early 1970s a new and important trend in Christian theology developed. Known as liberation theology, this perspective arose in a number of different contexts but all forms were united by a common interest in using Christian principles to 'liberate' people oppressed by things like racism and poverty.

Superman- Ultimate Flight
Aug 23rd 2011, 10:08

Look! Up in the air! It's...you, flying like Superman. There are similar roller coasters, but the Superman theme is ideally suited for the flying concept and adds a nice touch. The ride isn't built for height or faster-than-a-speeding-bullet speed (and, ironically, offers little-to-no airtime), but the flying sensation is wonderful.

Superman - Ultimate Flight Up-Front Info

  • Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy!, 10=Yikes!): 8
"Flying" position may be intimidating for some riders. Inversions.
  • Coaster type: Flying
  • Top speed: 51 mph
  • Height restriction to ride: 54 inches
  • Height of lift hill: 106 feet
  • First drop: 100 feet
  • Ride time: 2 minutes, 6 seconds
  • Be sure to remove everything from your pockets before riding. Since passengers face the ground for most of the ride, it's easy to lose items. Six Flags won't allow guests to retrieve fallen items until the ride closes at the end of the day.

Sitting at the back of the park by the parking lot, Superman- Ultimate Flight makes a great presentation on the Six Flags Great Adventure midway. The iconic superhero, striking one of his legendary poses, is perched on top of a large scrim in front of the ride. Every few minutes, a train full of screaming passengers flies above the scrim and past Superman. Riders enter the queue by going through a tunnel (the Fortress of Solitude, perhaps?) and snaking through a line to the loading station at the far end of a large open area. The coaster's blue and red track hangs above the queue and passengers dive within a few feet of those in line.

Get a Load of This

The first-generation flying coasters, like Batwing at Maryland's Six Flags America, have a convoluted loading process which includes multiple harnesses and motorized seatbacks. In those rides, passengers proceed up the lift hill backwards, and the track flips them at the top of the hill into a forward-facing flying position. Superman- Ultimate Flight uses a simpler restraint system and flying concept. Riders load the train facing forwards. Once the ride ops check the restraints, a mechanism tilts the seats 45 degrees backwards, and riders leave the station facing forwards in flying mode. Unlike the earlier flying coasters, which recline to an almost-prone position, passengers' knees are more bent on Superman. But, loading and unloading the ride takes much less time.

Still, the loading process takes longer than conventional coasters, and wait times can get dicey. (Riders can use Six Flags' Flash Pass to skip the lines.)

Superhero-in-Training

There are also Superman- Ultimate Flight coasters at Six Flags Great America, near Chicago, and Six Flags Over Georgia, near Atlanta. While they are essentially similar, the Georgia version uses two stations and a switch track to compensate for the extra load/unload time and keep the line moving. It would have been nice to feature two stations in New Jersey as well, but the park probably opted to save some bucks by eliminating the second station.

It feels odd to hang facing the ground while the train remains at a halt in the station. But when it navigates the track, it's a giddy, wonderful sensation. It's not quite like actually flying (not that I've experienced that), but it is wild to swoop down the first drop and careen through the ride like a superhero-in-training. Some of the elements, including a pretzel loop and a corkscrew, are disorienting as they send riders momentarily racing backwards and flipping over. I don't think I ever saw a flying superhero execute those maneuvers. But they help make the ride a load of fun.

With the over-the-shoulder restraints, riders can't quite stretch their arms out like Superman, but they can come close to fulfilling a childhood fantasy of flight.

Mission: SPACE review
Aug 23rd 2011, 10:08

From the start, the Disney theme parks have married technology and storytelling to whisk guests away to fantastic places. And from the early Disneyland days on, the Imagineers that design the attractions have been on a quest to whisk us away into the far regions of space. They've had varying degrees of success, from the impressive flight simulator-powered Star Tours to the ridiculous vibrating seats of (the decommissioned) Mission to Mars. Now, Disney Imagineers have aspired to the sublime; Mission: SPACE is a groundbreaking, awe-inspiring attraction that delivers sensations unlike any you have ever felt (unless you're an astronaut) and replicates space travel with an astonishing degree of reality. It figuratively--and literally-- takes your breath away.

Mission: SPACE at a glance

  • About Guide Rating (0=Yich!, 10=Wow!): 9
  • Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy!, 10=Yikes!): 7.5
The sustained G-forces can be unnerving; the simulated liftoff and flight is very realistic; the capsule is quite confining.
  • Attraction Type: Motion simulator using centrifuge technology
  • Height Requirements: 44 inches
  • Tips: Use Fastpass for this popular attraction. Also consider using the single-rider line for faster boarding.

If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking Dramamine.

If you think Dramamine won't do the trick, or you're just too freaked-out to even consider riding in a centrifuge (although you should buck it up and give it a whirl if you're on the line), Mission: SPACE does offer some non-spinning pods. The effect isn't nearly as wild, but you'll at least get a sense of the attraction.

Spaced-Out Story

If Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion represent the epitome of classic Disney theme park attractions, Mission: SPACE is their new-age successor. It transports guests to an alternate reality for a captivating, magical experience. From the moment you see the sleek facade with its metallic hues, curved lines, and the planetary orbs that line its courtyard, you're swept into the immersive attraction and its promise to launch you into orbit.

Here's the story: You've arrived at the International Space Training Center (ISTC) in the year 2036 (apparently, NASA and Russia's Aerospace Agency will merge in the not-too-distant future), and deep-space flight has become commonplace. Your mission is to join a team of fellow trainees, and learn how to pilot a spacecraft to Mars.

The storytelling gets a bit muddled. Most of the time Mission: SPACE reinforces the theme that guests are recruits preparing for an earthbound training exercise; occasionally, the attraction seems to imply that trainees will actually launch into space and travel to Mars. I guess the explanation for the lapse in continuity could be that ISTC's training program wants to make the experience as realistic as possible.

Big Bucks? Roger.

At the entrance to the attraction, guests can choose the standby, single-rider, or Fastpass queues. Mission: SPACE is one of the first attractions expressly designed to accommodate Disney's line management options. If guests are riding alone, or if they're willing to break up their parties, the single-rider queue can significantly reduce the wait time at the popular attraction.

Just inside the entrance, a model of the XT training capsule shows guests what's in store. Around the corner in the Space Simulation Lab, an enormous gravity wheel slowly spins. Evoking 2001: A Space Odyssey, the wheel includes a dining galley, sleeping quarters, an exercise room, and other areas to help trainees adjust to a weightless environment. The sheer scale of the structure shows the lavish budget (estimated at $100 million) Disney showered on the landmark Mission: SPACE. Other set pieces in the lab include an actual Lunar Rover courtesy of the Smithsonian.

The queue winds past a mission control-like operations room and into the dispatch area. Guests break into teams of four and proceed to the ready room. Here, they receive their assigned roles and learn about the training flight from the capsule communicator (Capcom). Hey, it's none other than Forrest Gump's Lt. Dan! (Aka actor Gary Sinise, who also appeared in--whaddya know?--the film, Mission to Mars.)

From the ready room, the recruits, now designated as commanders, pilots, navigators, and engineers, continue to the pre-flight corridor. After some additional instructions, the hallway doors open and it's time to board the X-2 training capsules.

Disney has made no attempt to hide the technology behind the magic. While climbing into and leaving the capsules, guests can plainly see the large centrifuge in the middle of the room and the ten capsule pods arranged around it. There are four of these ride bays in the Mission: SPACE complex. The lack of pretense plays into the story; Imagineers based the centrifuge and simulators on actual NASA training methods.

G-Whiz

Once cleared for liftoff, the capsule tilts back. Crewmembers see the launch platform through the pod's windows (actually high-definition flat-screen LCD monitors), the countdown commences, and--yeow!--the capsule rumbles, the G-Forces create an odd and giddy sensation, and it's up, up, and away. It's an astounding illusion. Even though you know the cabin is spinning around and tethered to the ground, everything is conspiring to convince you that it is moving towards the heavens.

Pinning guests to the seats, the liftoff's powerful positive Gs decrease as the capsule "slingshots" around the moon to accelerate towards Mars. At various junctures, the crewmembers receive instructions from Capcom to perform their specific duties, and the capsule responds convincingly to their interactive input.

At one point, Capcom informs crewmembers that they've reached 0Gs, or weightlessness. I believe the centrifuge slows or stops spinning. While the capsule and its occupants are actually experiencing the earth's normal gravitational force of 1G, the sudden drop from sustained higher G-Forces tricks the body into feeling a twinge of hang time--or, at least that's my theory.

Inevitable theme park attraction calamities ensue. Before arriving at Mars, the crew must fend off an asteroid field. And a safe landing goes horribly wrong when the ground beneath the capsule crumbles. Crewmembers must use their manual joystick controllers to navigate through some gut-wrenching maneuvers.

Speaking of gut wrenching, Disney has gone to great lengths throughout the queue to warn guests prone to motion sickness or sensitive to spinning and motion simulators that Mission: SPACE may not be for them. Is it for you? Only you can decide, but it is a breakthrough attraction with an experience unlike anything you've ever encountered. If you're on the line, you may want to consider popping a Dramamine to give it a whirl.

More on the Monstrosity of a Coaster Coming to Canada
Aug 22nd 2011, 16:32

A few days ago, I wrote about Leviathan, the 306-foot-tall, 92-mph beast of a Giga-Coaster coming to Canada's Wonderland next spring. Are you wondering what this insanely tall and fast ride looks like? Wonder no more. Check out the Leviathan Preview Photo Gallery and the Leviathan Preview Video. Then resign yourself to nearly a year of anticipation and longing. Sigh.

Biggest Indoor Water Parks
Aug 22nd 2011, 10:08

About.com's Theme Parks Guide says:

Whew. I don't know about you, but my head is still swimming after trying to make sense out of all those confusing claims and counter claims about the largest indoor water parks in America and North America. Did you notice, however, that none of the indoor water parks tried to boast that it was the largest in the world? There's good reason for that. There are two parks that, ahem, blow all of the North American parks out of the water.

In second place, at 322,752 square feet, is Ocean Dome in Miyazaki City, Japan. It is the length of three football fields, and has a retractable roof. It appears that Ocean Dome has closed, however.

And in first place--timpani, please--is Tropical Islands in Brand, Germany. Housed in a former zeppelin hangar, the structure spans over 710,000 square feet and is the largest freestanding building in the world. It can accommodate up to 7000 visitors. Tropical Islands offers a variety of attractions in addition to its indoor beach and water rides. Regardless, it easily qualifies as the world's largest indoor water park. Take that, Wisconsin Dells!

SplashDown Waterpark Overview:

A municipal attraction that is owned by Prince William County, SplashDown is a 13-acre, medium-sized water park. It doesn't offer the marquee features of larger water parks, such as bowl rides or surfing simulators, but it does offer the usual suspects of water slides and other watery diversions, albeit not a whole bunch of them. Keep in mind, however, that admission is fairly reasonably priced compared to the big parks, and SplashDown can offer some welcome relief, along with wet fun, on hot, humid days.

Among its collection of rides are two Cannonball slides, two Tropical Twister slides, and a lazy river (which has the creative name, "Lazy River"). There are some pint-sized slides and activities for younger visitors, and older kids will enjoy challenging the log walk and lily pad walk. In addition to its water park attractions, SplashDown offers volleyball, tennis, a sand play area, and a snack bar.

SplashDown serves double duty. Before the water park opens to the general public, it offers morning swim lessons (private and group) and play dates. Check with the park for more details.

Biggest Roller Coasters
Aug 21st 2011, 10:59

Roller coasters are often known for their speed. But in order to reach mind-numbing speeds, they have to first scale vertigo-inducing heights (at least in traditional non-launched coasters). The world's ten biggest roller coasters listed here make the grade for having the ten tallest drops. Since some of the coasters have underground tunnels or are built into ravines, they aren't necessarily ranked as measured from their highest points to ground level. Heights are included for each coaster. No standing beyond this point as we click-clack-click up the world's tallest coasters.

Number 10: Bizarro (formerly known as Superman: Ride of Steel)- 221 Foot Drop

It may not be the tallest coaster (although ranking number ten in the world counts for something, right?). It's not the fastest either. But, IMHO, Bizarro at Six Flags New England is the world's best coaster. Everything about it--the track layout, how the track integrates with the surrounding park, the airtime, the smooth ride, the relentless speed--is coaster nirvana.

Read a review of Bizarro.

Walt Disney World Hotels
Aug 19th 2011, 10:08

You'll get stripped-down accommodations along with a decent price at the Value Resorts, but you'll still get a potent dose of Disney whimsy as well as all of the general benefits of staying on property at Walt Disney World. Expect over-the-top themeing, nice pools, fast food, and an arcade. Don't expect table service restaurants (although you could dine anywhere throughout the resort, including at higher-level Disney hotels), a fitness center, a lounge, valet parking, or other amenities found at higher-priced resorts.

Get more info about Disney Value Resorts and search for rates at About.com's booking partner, Kayak:

California Halloween Events
Aug 19th 2011, 10:08

Virtually every major (and many of the minor) theme parks and amusement parks now offer Halloween-themed events. But the concept began in California when Knott's Berry Farm morphed into Knott's Scary Farm in 1972. Find out where and when monsters will be lurking along the midways and inside the haunted mazes of California parks for the 2011 Halloween season.

Knott's Scary Farm Halloween Haunt and Camp Spooky

Halloween Horror Nights 2011

Note that not all details have been released yet about this year's Halloween Horror Nights. Four mazes have been announced, including The Thing: Assimilation (based on the upcoming remake of the classic film), Hostel: Hunting Season, Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare, and Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses: In 3D ZombieVision. Classic shock-rocker Alice Copper will get the HHN treatment with a maze inspired by his twisted tunes such as "Sick Things" and "I Love the Dead." Director Eli Roth will help design the maze based on his Hostel film series. The famous backlot studio tour will transform into Terror Tram: Scream 4 Your Life during Halloween Horror Nights. Using Wes Craven's Scream films as inspiration, guests aboard the trams will encounter Ghostface Killer and experience other elements from the iconic movies.

It's highly likely that Bill and Ted will be back for another excellent adventure. For the uninitiated, the slacker time travelers star in a bizarre Broadway-esque song and dance romp each year in which they skewer current events and people in the news.

Many of the park's regular rides, such as the particularly timely Revenge of the Mummy, will be open for the event as well as the (relatively) new King Kong 360 3-D.

Disney's Halloween Time and Mickey's Trick-or-Treat Party

Disneyland Resort Disneyland and Disney California Adventure add some jack-o-lanterns and cobwebs to the parks and offer their own Halloween events--albeit considerably tamer ones than the gross-out freak-fests at Knott's, Universal Studios, and other parks. Disneyland park will once again transform its classic Haunted Mansion attraction with a Halloween-meets-Christmas theme into Haunted Mansion Holiday. By overlaying the characters from "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas," the attraction is able to maintain its haunted aura while introducing some off-kilter Yuletide cheer. It's a unique way to celebrate two holiday seasons. Disneyland will also reprise Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, a re-themed ride on the classic coaster.

Throughout the two California parks, Mickey and the gang will be decked out in their Halloween finest. Also, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, which terrorizes guests year-round at Disney's California Adventure, is accessorized for Halloween and all the spookier.
