Welcome to the Hotel Legoland California
Aug 30th 2011, 17:11

Because it had been rumored for some time, the recent announcement by Legoland California that it would be developing an onsite hotel didn't hit me like a ton of bricks. But it is big news for the popular park. Scheduled to break ground this October, the 250-room Legoland Hotel is scheduled to open in summer 2013.

The Lego-themed hotel will be geared to families with young children, the same audience that visits the park. Two hotels that are operated by third-party chains are already on the Legoland campus. The new hotel will be built and run by the park. There is a Legoland Hotel adjacent to the park in Billund, Denmark and another one under construction next to the park in Windsor, England. Legoland Florida is set to open in a few weeks, but there are no announced plans for a Sunshine State hotel. (Although I'd have to believe that should the California hotel and the Florida park prove successful, a hotel would be in the works pronto).

While the recession has been dealing blows to many other parks, Legoland California has been remarkably resilient and has posted impressive attendance numbers. Over the last few years, it has added a water park and a Sea Life Aquarium. With the addition of the hotel, it will become more like a destination resort.
