Complete details were not available when this was written but Fright Fest generally features seven haunted mazes plus three scare zones and special Halloween-themed shows. It's become a Fright Fest tradition to run the wooden coaster, Colossus, backwards, and to run other coasters such as X2 and Tatsu in the dark. Magic Mountain will also offer a more mild "Twick or Tweat" area in Bugs Bunny World with crafts, a trick-or-treat trail, and "Scaryoke" for younger kids.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Vallejo (near San Francisco), CA

  • 2011 dates: Oct. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 28-30.

Fright Fest will feature four new haunted attractions for its 2011 event, including Slaughterhouse Pig Farm, where the dastardly purveyors have run out of pork and are looking for an alternative source of meat (if you get the not-so-subtle hint), and Last Ride, in which guests who are foolish enough to willingly participate -- and pay extra for the opportunity, I might add -- can find out what it's like to be buried alive. Claustrophobics and otherwise sane people may want to skip that last one. Two "zombie zones," including Scrapyard of the Dead, will also be offered. During the day, Discovery Kingdom caters to younger kids with trick or treat stations and other activities. Special Fright Fest shows are more mild than wild: Club Cetacean, Shouka Nights, and the Super Spooky Sea Lion Show.

Georgia

Six Flags Over Georgia, Austell (near Atlanta), GA

  • 2011 dates: Oct. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 21-23, 28-30.
  • Cost: Included in Six Flags admission, with the exception of the haunted house and the buried alive attraction, which require extra fees.

Complete details were not available when this was written but expect Six Flags Over Georgia to bring back the Last Ride, which, for an additional fee, will offer guests the experience of being buried alive. Seriously! This is twisted stuff, folks. There will also be a haunted house and themed shows, which in the past have included Dr. Fright's CarnEvil and Bad Bob, the Bone Butcher (sounds like a lovely chap, eh?). During the day, younger kids can enjoy more mild events in Bugs Bunny Spooky Town, including trick-or-treating, pumpkin painting, and spooky stories.

Illinois

Six Flags Great America, Gurnee (near Chicago and Milwaukee), IL

  • 2011 dates: Oct. 1, 2, 7-10, 14-16, 21-23, 28-30
  • Cost: Included in Six Flags admission. (Haunted houses require an extra fee.)

Six Flags Over Georgia had not announced all of its Fright Fest details when this was written, but if the past is a guide, it will probably present a daily Zombie Jamboree Parade to kick off the event. Also look for four haunted houses (which require an extra fee) and frightful shows, which last year featured Susan Rosen- Mistress of Mesmerism and the musical, Love at First Fright. For younger kids, special attractions will include a trick-or-treat trail.

Maryland

Six Flags America, Mitchellville (near Washington, D.C.), MD

  • 2011 dates: Oct. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 21-23, 28-30
  • Cost: Included in Six Flags admission.

I don't have all of the details yet, because the park hadn't announced them when I wrote this, but expect Fright Fest musical shows, which last year included Frightmares and Monster Mash Bash, as well as a haunted maze. For the young 'uns, the park will offer activities such as a trick-or-treat trail, a magic show, and a Not-so-Scary Kiddie Hayride.

The next page features Fright Fest events at Six Flags parks in Massachusetts to Texas, plus La Ronde in Canada.
