In brief
For its second park, Disneyland could have drawn inspiration from Walt Disney World and gone with a concept tried and true such as Epcot (in fact, there were plans at one time to develop a park called "Westcot") or, given its proximity to Hollywood, Disney's Hollywood Studios (as the company has done with its second Paris park). Instead, Disney tried something bolder and developed an entirely new park based on California--the state and the state of mind.

However, the company forgot something kind of important as it was designing DCA: attractions. With about one-third the number of rides and shows as Disneyland Park, there just isn't as much to do here. And a surprising number of the park's rides are off-the-shelf spinning rides. For all of its shortcomings however, DCA does have some great attractions and wonderful themeing. And with a major expansion that will include a Cars Land, a re-desinged front entrance, and more, the park is evolving in the right direction.

Roller Coaster Terms
Feb 3rd 2012, 11:04

E through I

E

Element
The generic word for the turnarounds, corkscrews and other effects designed into coasters.

Elevator Cable Lift
Instead of a traditional chain lift, coasters with elevator cable lifts (which use a technology similar to the mechanisms found in building elevators) move considerably faster up their lift hills--and do not exhibit the click-clack-click of a chain lift's anti-rollback device.

ERT (Exclusive Ride Time)
The special "members-only" time parks establish for coaster clubs or other groups to ride coasters.

F

Family Coaster (or Junior)
A generally more tame ride than the thrill-seekers' behemoths.

First Drop
The initial and (generally) the biggest and fastest descent on a coaster.

Floorless
A coaster whose train has no floor. Essentially "flying seats," the train sits above the track and riders have nothing above or below them other than the seat itself.

Flying Coaster
On first-generation flying coasters, the seats recline into a prone position and face backwards so that when the train inverts, riders are in a superhero-like flying position. The cars include harness-type safety restraints that can be a bit unnerving at first. The seats on later models simply pivot 45 degrees down in the loading station to get passengers into flying mode and leave facing forward.

Fourth Dimension
A type of coaster in which the seats are placed on the outside of the tracks and are able to spin, independent of the trains. Six Flags Magic Mountain has two examples of fourth dimension coasters: the pioneering X2 and the more compact Green Lantern, which its manufacturer dubs a "ZacSpin" model.

Freefall
Rides that are powered up and then freefall straight down. Are they coasters? That's a matter of some disagreement as some say the 400-plus foot Superman attraction at Six Flags Magic Mountain is either one of the world's tallest roller coasters or a very tall freefall attraction.

G

G-Forces
The forces, either negative or positive, that force riders out or pin them down into their seats. Brief bursts of moderate G-forces are coaster nirvana. Too little or too much is coaster purgatory.

Giga-Coaster
If a hypercoaster refers to coasters that surpass 200 feet, what do you call ones that break the 300-foot threshold? Cedar Point and ride manufacturer, Intamin AG, coined the term, Giga-Coaster, for mold-breaker Millennium Force. Like most hypercoasters, these behemoths are built for height, speed, acceleration, and intense G-forces. While they may have highly banked turns, they generally do not have any inversions.

Grab Bars
The handles to the side or front of riders that allow them to hang on for their dear lives.

Guide Wheels
Ever wonder why coaster trains don't fly off of their tracks? They have an extra set of guide wheels under the train that lock the cars to the track.

H

Head Choppers
A lovely expression used to describe the narrow openings into which Twister Coasters send their riders. Duck!

Heartline Roll (or Zero-G Roll)
An element in which the train twists but the riders' hearts stay roughly in line with the center of the curve.

Helix
A spiral section of track that turns into itself and is typically highly banked. It delivers high doses of lateral (side-to-side) G-forces. A double helix completes two 360-degree turns.

Hydraulic Launch
Most launched coasters use magnetic propulsion to shoot the trains out of the loading stations. Coasters such as Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster, however, use hydraulics to achieve the same effect.

Hypercoaster
Loosely defined as any coaster whose height exceeds 200 feet. Generally does not include any inversions. Hypercoasters are all about height, speed, acceleration, G-forces and airtime. Especially airtime.

I

Immelmann Roll
A half-loop that inverts coaster cars for a half twist and sends them in the reverse direction. Named after a World War 1 German ace who popularized the flying maneuver.

Impulse Coasters
Uses magnetic induction to launch trains forwards and backwards up a U-shaped track. Typically, one side of the track is a spiral, and the other side is straight. The ride usually cycles through five launches, each one progressively faster.

Inverted Coaster
The train hangs underneath the tracks, but unlike a suspended coaster, it cannot pivot freely. Also, inverted coasters have no floors and riders' legs dangle. Think of a ski lift gone haywire.

Inversion
An element that turns riders upside down

Invertigo
Like a Boomerang Coaster, but with inverted trains.

What's New at Theme Parks?
Feb 2nd 2012, 11:24

What new goodies are parks planning for us? This is where to get the lowdown on the new roller coasters, attractions, rides, and shows are on tap? Discover the latest and greatest theme park happenings.

2012 Will Be a Great Ride

Holiday World, 2011. Used with permission.
It's an incredibly exciting year at theme parks. Insane new roller coasters, cutting-edge attractions, new record-holders, and so much more await park fans in 2012. There's such an overload of goodness, it's going to be hard to figure out how to fit it all in. To help you decide how to plan your park visits, I've compiled all the new developments in a handy-dandy, park-by-park list. Are you ready to ride?

Fairy Tales can Come True at Expanded WDW Fantasyland in 2012 and 2013

Disney 2009. Used with permission.

A major expansion at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida will more than double the size of Fantasyland. With two phases scheduled to open in 2012 and 2013, the land will offer richer, more immersive experiences and will introduce a wider array of characters. Instead of simple meet-and-greets, the new mini-lands will envelop guests in the worlds of Disney's classic films and get them involved in hands-on adventures.

All in All, Another Brick in the Fall at New Legoland Florida

It's now open! Built on the site of the former Cypress Gardens and opened in October 2011, the new Legoland Florida is larger than any of the current four Legolands (including the sole US property, Legoland California). It offers about 50 rides and shows. Like the other parks, it is geared to the 12-and-under set, and features Lego-themed lands and attractions, many of which are interactive and include hands-on activities.

The transformed park will include a new entry plaza, a new Cars Land, new attractions, a new nighttime spectacular, and more.

Despicable Stuff Coming to Sunshine State. The Florida Ride Guide 2012

Among the new goodies there will be an all-new motion simulator attraction based on the hit film, Despicable Me, headed to Universal Studios Florida and a 3-D film and marine life exhibit about turtles coming to SeaWorld Orlando.

California Parks Transform in 2012

Universal Studios 2008. Used with permission
Nostalgia is often part of the appeal of theme parks. Honoring and preserving the past is good, but parks cannot stand still nor rest on its laurels. Many California parks are transforming themselves in 2012 with a slew of new attractions, including Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, Transformers at Universal Studios Hollywood, and Manta at SeaWorld San Diego.

Bigger Better Potter

From the moment that Harry Potter and the gang took up residence at Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure, the response has been nothing short of phenomenal. And since people can't seem to get enough Potter, Universal is doing the logical thing and giving them more.

Roller Coaster Ride Guide 2012

Six Flags, 2011. Used with permission.
What a year for coaster lovers. Many parks will be spending big bucks to bring big, bad, new thrill machines. Read about the two "wing" coasters coming to Six Flags Great America and Dollywood, the 200-foot Skyrush debuting at Hersheypark, the monstrous Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland, the almost-as-monstrous Shambhala at PortAventura, and many more.

Six Flags Ride Guide 2012

Six Flags, 2011. Used with permission.
There are some spectacular coasters and other rides coming to Six Flags. How spectacular? Well, how about the world's tallest vertical drop ride? It will cause hearts to race, armpits to perspire, and Lord knows what other bodily functions at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It's hard to imagine a more thrilling ride.

Turtles, Penguins, Rides, and Shows Coming to SeaWorld Orlando in 2012 and 2013

SeaWorld Orlando, 2011. Used with permission.
Continuing its tradition of combining live animal experiences with themed rides and shows, SeaWorld Orlando has two major attractions coming. In 2012, the park will open TurtleTrek, an exhibit that will include real sea turtles and super-duper virtual turtles presented in glorious 360-degree 3-D. The following year, SeaWorld's penguins will shuffle over to a newly expanded attraction that will feature a ride-through experience.

Go Up Schlitt's Creek -- Year Round
Feb 1st 2012, 17:52

One of the most innovative and popular water park chains has a new property coming. This summer, Schlitterbahn will be opening an indoor water park hotel on South Padre Island in Texas, near its existing outdoor water park. The beachfront resort, which will be built on the site of a former Holiday Inn, will feature 221 upscale rooms and include onsite restaurants and retail shops.

According to the resort, the water park will be capable of converting between an indoor and outdoor facility to accommodate the weather and will be open all year long. Resort guests will also be able to use Schlitterbahn's current water park. Known for pioneering developments such as FlowRider surfing attractions and the Transpotainment conveyance system that shuttles riders from one water slide to the next via a lazy river, the company announced that its new South Padre park will introduce new water park technology, although it says that details will be forthcoming.
