Get ready for Bluegrass Boardwalk. That will be the name of the theme park opening next year in Louisville, Kentucky on the site of the former Kentucky Kingdom. Six Flags operated Kentucky Kingdom until the debt-ridden company pulled out of its lease before the 2010 season. It has been shuttered since then. The new operators will be members of the Koch family that run the highly successful and popular Holiday World in nearby Indiana.
There are some existing coasters and other attractions at the park, which also includes an adjacent water park. The Bluegrass Boardwalk team will be investing up to $20 million as it prepares for a May 2013 opening. Among the changes it will bring to the park will be the introduction of free soft drinks, free sunscreen, and free use of inner tubes, all hallmarks of Holiday World's customer-friendly attitude. The park sits on land owned by the Kentucky State Fair and serves as the fair's midway. Bluegrass Boardwalk signed a lease with the Fair board yesterday and is now seeking funding for the project.
